  • Epic Games pulls Fortnite YouTube ads over child predator concerns

It's now unknown when, or even if, Epic Games will reinstate their Fortnite pre-roll adverts.

Epic Games joined several other YouTube advertisement partners in pulling and pausing their pre-roll advertisements on Google's video service.

YouTuber Matt "MattsWhatItIs" Watson uncovered the issue during a video in mid February, where he noted that he was able to find suggestive videos of young girls within five clicks on the site. It's been claimed that YouTube's algorithms allow pedophiles to post sexual comments or timestamps on kids' videos to identify parts where they can be seen in compromising positions.

YouTube added that this type of content and language is strictly prohibited on its website and that the company has policies prohibiting the endangerment of minors.

In the past few days, according to the Verge, YouTube has already deleted some 400 channels in connection with child exploitation.

It has also disabled comments on tens of millions of videos that include minors.

"Videos of children showing their exposed buttocks, underwear and genitals are racking up millions of views on YouTube-with the site displaying advertising from major cosmetics and auto brands alongside the content", Wired UK wrote.

A Nestle representative said that it will work with YouTube and determine when to start advertising with the platform again. "The executives also told ad buyers the company will deliver a timeline in 24 hours outlining new restrictions and product changes, one of the people said".

Meanwhile, research done by Wired.com said that ads appeared from major brands such as Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Fortnite, Grammarly, L'Oreal, Maybelline and Peloton were said to appear alongside disturbing videos of children doing activities such as Twister, yoga challenges, and gymnastics. Many of these videos had ads connected to them as well and, in the examples shown, one was for Fortnite.

YouTube did not comment on advertisers suspending their spending. Crazy, right? The latest tinderbox issue is that YouTube has - as has been pointed out amid similar scandals over the years - a problem with covert child predation. YouTube said at the time that it would take a more "aggressive stance" on curbing abusive posts by turning off the commenting feature when it detected such posts.

'An extremely low volume of some of our advertisements were shown on videos on YouTube where inappropriate comments were being made, ' a spokesman said.
