He also said Kim had said he was ready to allow global inspectors into North Korea's Punggye-ri nuclear testing site and the Sohae missile engine test facility as soon as the United States and North Korea agreed on logistics.

North Korea denounced Pompeo on his previous trip to Pyongyang in July for making "gangster-like demands".

"We believe this has been a direct attack on our mutual trust, and has cast a shadow on China-U.S. relations", Wang said. North Korea has offered conditionally to close the site, but has not made a public comment on its inspection.

State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said Pompeo "directly addressed ‎areas where the United States and China do not agree, including on the South China Sea and human rights".

While China's foreign ministry said at a news briefing Monday that broader tensions wouldn't undermine cooperation on North Korea, Wang told Pompeo that the issue illustrated the importance of maintaining a working relationship.

"We can't rule out the possibility that Washington. may move in the direction of partial easing of sanctions based on progress in denuclearisation", he said. "We'll continue to make significant progress and we are further along in making that progress than any administration in an awfully long time".

Pompeo said there was agreement that Kim and President Donald Trump would hold their second summit as soon as possible, but plans for a sequel to their June meeting in Singapore already were in the works.

Pope Francis has also this year expressed support for ongoing improving inter-Korean relations, saying the April 27 Panmunjom summit represented "a concrete route toward reconciliation and regained brotherhood with the aim of guaranteeing peace on the Korean Peninsula and in the entire world".

Diplomatic negotiations continued at the third inter-Korean summit between Kim and Moon, which took place September 18 in Pyongyang during a week in which Catholics in South Korea celebrated the peninsula's martyr saints.

"I know that you would like to discuss the North Korea issue and other relational issues with me on this visit", Wang said. Pompeo didn't meet with Kim on that trip. "After having a nice meeting we can enjoy a meal together", Kim told Pompeo as they walked down a hallway toward a guesthouse dining room. But we'll see. We're talking about three or four different locations'.

There are now an estimated 80,000 to 120,000 people in North Korea's six political prison camps, in which the U.S. State Department has found evidence of starvation, forced labor and torture. Pope John Paul II did receive an invite from Kim Jong-un's father, Kim Jong-il, in 2000.

Mr. Lu's response tailed Mr. Pompeo's Asia visit, which took him to Japan, North Korea and China. In June, NBC News reported that an updated intelligence assessment concluded that North Korea was stepping up production of fuel for nuclear weapons at secret sites across the country.
