"Thirty-five years ago, the other students in the room chose to laugh and look the other way as sexual violence was perpetrated on me by Brett Kavanaugh", Ramirez said in a statement on Saturday. Flake did not address Murkowski's unexpected break, which she claims she decided only as she walked to the Senate chamber for the vote.

Collins said Christine Blasey Ford's dramatic testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee last week describing Kavanaugh's alleged 1982 assault on her were "sincere, painful and compelling".

Moments after Collins pledged to back Kavanaugh, Democratic Senator Joe Manchin, in a tough race for re-election in West Virginia where Trump is popular, also declared his support.

Murkowski, the only Republican to vote against advancing Kavanaugh's nomination during Friday's cloture vote, made clear that while her final vote will be recorded as "present" she remains opposed to confirming the nominee.

Republican Senate Judiciary Chair Sen.

"I've never considered a president's party or identity" in confirming a Supreme Court justice, Collins said, adding that she confirmed President Obama's Supreme Court picks Justice Elena Kagan and Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

This comes as Deborah Ramirez said on Saturday the senate is "looking the other way" when it comes to her accusation that Kavanaugh exposed himself to her when they were students at Yale.

Kavanaugh denied the allegations, but two more women came with different sexual assault allegations against him.

Ford's sister-in-law: Senators create an 'alternate reality' to support Kavanaugh
John Thune of South Dakota, a member of the GOP leadership, said he would be "very surprised" if Murkowski switches her vote. Capping a tense day on Friday, Collins of Maine declared on the Senate floor, "I will vote to confirm Judge Kavanaugh".

Kavanaugh's confirmation vote is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Susan Collins, a Maine Republican, said that sexual assault allegations against Kavanaugh weren't strong enough to persuade her to vote no.

Despite the letter, the Senate voted 51-49 to move forward with Kavanaugh on Friday to a final vote on his confirmation.

As Washington Post White House reporter Seung Min Kim explained, Murkowski's vote likely signals a "no" vote on the final Kavanaugh nomination vote as well.

"I don't think she has any regrets", Banks said.

She told reporters that Mr Kavanaugh is "a good man" but maybe "not the right man for the court at this time". Jeff Flake said he could not support a full Senate vote on Kavanaugh's confirmation until a supplemental background check was conducted.

Hours before the undecided senators indicated their backing, the US Senate narrowly advanced President Donald Trump's nominee to a final vote by voting to strictly limit debate on the issue.

Susan Rice, national security adviser to President Barack Obama, tweeted she would consider challenging Collins in 2020, saying she was deeply disappointed in Collins' vote.
