Grassley, who also wrote "with all the extensions we give Dr. Ford to decide if she still wants to testify to the Senate I feel like I'm playing 2nd trombone in the judiciary orchestra and Schumer is the conductor", granted Ford the extension.

After setting a sudden 10:00 PM deadline for agreement with his terms and rejecting further talks with Ford or her lawyers, Grassley has reportedly scheduled a Committee vote on the confirmation for Monday.

It does raise the question about whether or not he should ask the Federal Bureau of Investigation to do additional fact-finding, as Ford has requested, which he has so far refused to do.

Ford, 51, says an inebriated Kavanaugh pinned her on a bed during a high school party in the 1980s, muffled her screams and tried undressing her before she escaped.

Marsha Poindexter, who has been a self-employed insurance agent for 20 years in Springfield, Missouri, said that Ford needs to appear before the committee if she wants to level accusations.

The committee's Republicans proposed a Wednesday hearing on a sexual assault allegation against Mr Kavanaugh, a day earlier than his accuser is seeking, as both sides stepped up pressure over the terms of what would be explosive testimony.

Minutes after Trump's tweet on Friday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell played verbal hardball of his own, drawing a standing ovation when he assured a gathering of evangelical activists that the conservative Kavanaugh would soon be a justice.

"First of all, we know that allegations of sexual assault - I'm not saying that's what happened in this case - but we know allegations of sexual assault are one of the most unreported crimes that exist".

Asking Kavanaugh to go first is "not doable", according to the source, noting he would need to respond to any new accusation that comes up at the hearing.

McConnell has wanted to whisk Kavanaugh to confirmation before the court's new term starts October 1 - and before November's elections.

"President Trump has nominated a stunningly successful individual".

President Trump weighed in heavily on the allegations on social media on Friday.

Trump's Friday tweets contrasted with comments earlier in the week when he said Ford should be heard, even if it meant a delay in the confirmation process.

He said while Kavanaugh had agreed to testify, Ford, a clinical psychology professor at Palo Alto University, declined. Last December, for example, he endorsed Alabama U.S. Senate candidate Roy Moore, who had been abandoned by most Republicans after he was accused of sexual misconduct with underage girls.

"Running into him that day was a gift", she told the room. "I ask that she bring those filings forward so that we can learn date, time, and place", Trump tweeted. "Why did I freeze?", she asked herself.

But for Republicans, particularly in the Senate, it appeared that the only outcome potentially worse than confirming Kavanaugh is not confirming him.

Trump's outburst saw a new #MeToo era hashtag storm the internet, with #WhyIDidntReport the top trending conversation starter on US Twitter Friday, as people, mostly women, vented outrage over past transgressions and voiced solidarity with Ford.

On Friday, the women speaking in defense of the nominee elaborated they were not trying to "impugn Ford's character or motives", but rather to voice support for a man they know and respect.

"If you want to have a longtime impact on what kind of country we're going to have for the next generation the single most consequential thing we can do is these lifetime appointment of men and women to the court who believe that the job of a judge is to follow the law", McConnell said.
