In a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee, Judge said he does not remember Kavanaugh acting "in the manner Dr. Ford describes".

Those who work with survivors of sexual assault and some criminal justice analysts say the fact that Ms. Ford's explosive assertions did not surface until more than 35 years after the alleged incident and just before the Senate Judiciary Committee was scheduled to vote on Judge Kavanaugh's nomination should not cast her story in a negative light.

Sen. Chuck Grassley, a Republican from Iowa, said on radio's Hugh Hewitt Show that he'd not yet received confirmation from the accuser that she would appear at Monday's hearing, despite several attempts to reach her. So do they want to have the hearing or not?

Democrats have called for a full FBI investigation of the allegations, however, saying the Monday hearing will be too soon. "Now it's just a he-said-she-said thing, and the opportunity to go back and forth to the various parties, if this had been a confidential investigation by committee counsels, has been lost". Ford tells the Post that she sent a letter about Kavanaugh to Senator Dianne Feinstein via Eshoo's office.

Kavanaugh's statement came shortly after Ford said through her attorney that she would be willing to speak with Congress to tell her side of the story.

U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren tweeted yesterday, "Christine Blasey Ford is fearless, deserves to be heard, and treated with respect as she raises new questions about Brett Kavanaugh".

Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, who has not yet announced how she will vote, said Ford deserved her day before the committee.

Ford has alleged that while at a party during their high school years, Kavanaugh pushed her into a bedroom and assaulted her.

Slamming Collins' recommendation to the Senate Judiciary Committee as "beyond shameful", Ultraviolet founder Shaunna Thomas added: "This is not a trial".

Republican Senator Susan Collins, considered a key potential swing vote, tweeted that both should testify under oath.

The move forced Republicans to put off a planned committee vote for Thursday on Kavanaugh's nomination.

The woman, Christine Blasey Ford, came forward on Sunday with her claim that a drunken Kavanaugh pinned her down and attempted to take off her clothes at a party around 1982. As Georgetown University law professor David Super notes, federal law explicitly says these previous statements are not regarded as hearsay, or unreliable, when they are used "to rebut an express or implied charge that the declarant recently fabricated it or acted from a recent improper influence or motive in so testifying".

"Because this never happened, I had no idea who was making this accusation until she identified herself yesterday".

Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah, who is on the judiciary committee, said Republicans are "naturally" concerned about the optics of having only Republican men question Ford "because there's always a lot of prejudice in these matters".

Kavanaugh has denied the allegations. If there is credible evidence that Kavanaugh committed a crime, the American people deserve to know and Ford deserves justice. She said President George H.W. Bush had asked the FBI to investigate Anita Hill's allegations against Thomas.

The sexual assault allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh recall Anita Hill's accusations against Clarence Thomas in 1991, but there are important differences as well as cautions for senators considering how to deal with the allegations. Additionally, in the therapy notes, there is no mention of Kavanaugh's name, but Ford and her husband claim that she mentioned him in the session.
