Hurricane Florence Drowned a Riverfront 30 Miles from the North Carolina Coast

Hurricane Florence made landfall near Wilmington on Friday morning, battering the coastal city with strong winds and torrential rain.

The National Hurricane Center said a gauge north of Wilmington in Emerald Isle, North Carolina, reported 1.92 metres of inundation. As of Friday morning, Atlantic Beach, a town on the state's Outer Banks barrier islands, already had received 30 inches (76 cm) of rain, the U.S. Geological Service said.

Some 200,000 people are reported to be without power as winds down power lines and cause destruction across coastlines.

A North Carolina city situated between two rivers says it has around 150 people waiting to be rescued from rising flood waters from Hurricane Florence.

Spanish moss waved in the trees as the winds picked up in Wilmington, and floating docks bounced atop swells at Morehead City.

It remains a Category 1 hurricane with top sustained winds of 90 miles per hour (150 kph), but a gust of 112 miles per hour (180 kph) was reported just offshore. It will likely weaken more on Friday, with "rapid weakening forecast over the weekend", the hurricane center said.

More than 700,000 people were left without power and millions more were warned by the governor of North Carolina that they were facing "an extremely unsafe situation".

Others, though, chose to stay at home and perhaps regretted their decision. "I'm a little bit scared right now, but I have my iPad and I'm watching Netflix". Through noon Friday, 96 stores in the Carolinas and one in Virginia were closed because of the storm.
