Hurricane Florence prompts mandatory evacuations

  • Hurricane Florence Is Traveling A Similar Path As A 1933 Storm That Got Very, Very Close To D.C.

Carrying winds of up to 220 km/h, Hurricane Florence - a Category 4 storm - is expected to strengthen and possibly become Category 5 on Tuesday.

Hurricane Florence underwent a rapid intensification Monday morning, strengthening to category 4 intensity with maximum sustained winds of 130 miles per hour.

The governors of Virginia, Maryland, and North and SC have declared states of emergency ahead of the storm.

The first effects were already being seen on barrier islands as unsafe rip currents hit beaches and seawater flowed over a state highway.

"Let me be clear: North Carolina is taking Hurricane Florence seriously and you should too", Mr Cooper said at a news conference.

Its center will move between Bermuda and the Bahamas on Tuesday and Wednesday and approach the coast of SC or North Carolina on Thursday.

S.C. Rep. Alan Clemmons, R-Horry, tweeted Monday afternoon that McMaster had told legislators he would order evacuations for the coast beginning at noon Tuesday.

Henry McMaster lifted the mandatory evacuation of Beaufort, Jasper and Colleton counties Tuesday morning.

Two other storms are spinning in the Atlantic.

Just in case anyone thought the post and event was a genuine storm deterrent method, he added: "Note: do not actually discharge firearms into the air".

The athletics department is now monitoring the forecast for Hurricane Florence.

"We here in North Carolina are bracing for a hard hit", Cooper said Monday.

Evacuations were also ordered along the Virginia coast for about 245,000 people, according to Gov. Ralph Northam. "Electricity and water will be unavailable for several days to weeks after the storm passes", reads the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. One out of every five South Carolinians, about 1 million in all, are in the evacuation zones covering eight counties.

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster said an estimated 1 million people would be fleeing his state's coast, with eastbound lanes of Interstate 26 heading into Charleston and US 501 heading into Myrtle Beach reversed to ease the exodus.

States of emergency have been declared in South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia and Maryland, with President Donald Trump approving emergency declarations in South and North Carolina.

"We know the evacuation order I'm issuing will be inconvenient", McMaster said. "These tropical storms and hurricanes are very unsafe".

It's expected to make landfall somewhere over the Carolinas on Thursday. Wind speeds are higher - in the 130-156 mile-per-hour range.

Life-threatening storm surges - as high as 10 feet or more - also are likely along portions of the coast, in addition to high surf and "deadly" rip currents, which Quagliariello said will continue through the week. The storm is moving west-northwest at 15 miles per hour.

Since 1851, only one hurricane has brought sustained Category-4 winds to North Carolina: Hurricane Hazel in 1954, Colorado State University meteorologist Phil Klotzbach said. People rushed to get emergency kits ready, map out escape routes, fill sandbags and secure their homes.
