US Open outburst: Umpires to boycott Serena's matches

  • Serena Williams had a heated exchange with chair umpire Carlos Ramos during the U.S. Open women's final

It was enough to get under his thin-skin and some say it enabled newcomer Naomi Osaka to secure her first US Open win against her idol.

The WTA sided with Williams, saying, "There should be no difference in the standards of tolerance provided to the emotions expressed by men versus women".

The rising tennis star's victory was sadly overshadowed by a firestorm of controversy after Williams confronted chair umpire Carlos Ramos and was slapped with three code violations.

"There's no one more experienced, no one more knowledgeable, no one more capable as an umpire than Carlos Ramos". The Serbian added, "I don't think it's [the] time and place really to get into other subjects".

"There is a lot of unhappiness in the umpiring community because no one is standing up for officials", an anonymous source told The Guardian.

The ugly incident reduced Osaka to tears, with NY fans launching into a continual chorus of boos after Williams demanded an apology from Ramos after he penalised her for being coached from the stands before branding him a "thief" for treating her differently to male players.

The New York Times reports that Ramos has been the chair umpire in all four men's singles Grand Slam finals, as well as the men's Olympic final in 2012 in London.

King, however, said Williams was not aware she had been handed a first violation and was surprised to have a point taken from her when she received a second for later smashing her racquet.

Keegan Bradley wins BMW Championship
At the 425-yard par-4 11th, Cantlay got on in 2 and missed his par putt from 5 feet, finishing with a 3-putt bogey. The competition was won by American Keegan Bradley who bested England's Justin Rose in a playoff.

"The umpiring fraternity is thoroughly disturbed at being abandoned" by officials with the Women's Tennis Association who questioned Ramos' rulings in such a high-profile contest, Ings said. Matters escalated and Williams called Ramos a "thief," incurring the crucial game penalty.

"I felt like he blew it", said King.

Last September 9, backlash from the US Open came after officials penalized 23-time tennis grand slam victor Serena Williams with a 17,000 United States dollars for her actions during the match.

The third violation was also controversial - Williams, who hadn't stopped speaking angrily to Ramos since the coaching penalty, was docked a full game for "verbal abuse".

The ITF though came up with a delayed statement backing Ramos, saying the Portuguese official's decision at the US Open final "was in accordance with the relevant rules".

"It was really unbelievable", Osaka said about playing against Williams.

Ramos has since spoken out about the backlash via Portugal's Tribuna Expresso.
