Joe Jackson, the patriarch of the Jackson family and the music legend behind the Jackson 5, has died.

Joe Jackson died on Wednesday, a Jackson family source confirmed to ET.

He had 11 kids, including 10 with his estranged wife Katherine, and one, with Cheryl Terrell. He formed a band called the Jackson Brothers in 1963, which included his sons Tito, Jackie, and Jermaine; three years later, the group was renamed the Jackson 5 when sons Michael and Marlon were added to its ranks. revealed last week that the King of Pop's father was on his deathbed and later hospitalized as he battled stage four pancreatic cancer.

The Daily Mail reported that Joe Jackson had instructed that he did not want family members to visit him in the hospital or to see his medical records. "You gave us strength, you made us one of the most famous families in the world", she said.

A verified Twitter account for Joe Jackson tweeted this past weekend that he had "seen more sunsets than I have left to see". Michael Jackson, who drastically changed his face with plastic surgery through the years, talked several times about how his father would mock the size of his once-broad nose, calling him "big nose".

Jermaine Jackson has been updating his followers about his father's ailing health in recent weeks. Instead, he made his sons into superstars.

But Joe Jackson also drew scrutiny when his children, including La Toya and Michael, described him as physically and emotionally abusive.

He referenced that toughness recently when he shared some advice for grandson Blanket Jackson in a heartfelt video: "Be like me: Be tough, in a good way, and you'll live a long time".

Jackson married his wife, Katherine, in 1949. Their rise lifted the family out of poverty in Gary, Indiana, and into lives of fame and fortune.

The Jackson 5 and Michael Jackson were both inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

"I look at it this way: You've got six boys in Gary, Indiana, and so I can say that he got those six boys out of Gary, Indiana, and the rest of the family out of Gary and now our name is internationally known throughout the world", Marlon said. "It would make me sad that I would have to go to work instead", he said.

I will always love you! "But they didn't get in touch with me". He wrote,"This man is and always will be an example of sheer willpower and dedication". Bodyguards said they turned away Joseph Jackson when he appeared at the gate wanting to visit his grandchildren.

Joe managed his kids' various careers from the beginning, but as they matured, tensions mounted.

No cause of death has been released, but Jackson had reportedly been in ill health.

He also suffered a stroke on July 26, 2015 (the same day as his 87th birthday) while traveling in Brazil. A year later, he shot down rumors of his own demise on his website, proclaiming, "I am 100% alive".

According to Clark County officials, Jackson was pronounced dead at 2:55 Nathan Adelson Hospice in Las Vegas.
