  • Soccer Football- World Cup- Group H- Colombia vs Japan- Mordovia Arena Saransk Russia

The first red card of the tournament has been awarded against Colombia midfielder Carlos Sanchez for handling a goal-bound shot in the area in the third minute against Japan.

James Rodriguez was left out of Colombia's starting line-up for their opening World Cup match against Japan on Tuesday as the Brazil 2014 top scorer labours with a calf strain.

Colombia got off to a disastrous start when an error by Davinson Sanchez saw Osaka break through on goal.

The first red card of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russian Federation belongs to Colombia.

Shinji Kagawa scored from the resulting penalty to give Japan the lead.

Pekerman defended his strategy, which included subbing in attacking midfielder and 2014 Golden Boot victor James Rodriguez, who had been left out of the starting lineup because of muscle pain.

Travelling Colombia fans turned the Mordovia Arena into a sea of yellow for the early kick-off but were soon stunned into silence.

Yuya Osako won a bouncing ball to begin a sequence that led to the red card and the penalty.

History-making Afghanistan get baptism of fire in Test cricket
Afghanistan will be even more determined as they are the most risky among the bunch. Today, they are household names in the few years they've played.

Opposing them will be the Samurai Blue of Japan, led by a veteran generation that includes the likes of Keisuke Honda, Shinji Kagawa and Shinji Okazaki.

It was the second-fastest red card in World Cup finals history, after Uruguay's Sergio Batista was sent off inside the first minute in 1986.

Colombia captain Radamel Falcao, who made his World Cup debut after a knee injury sidelined him in 2014, said his team will approach its remaining group games like "two finals".

But the Argentine-born Pekerman lauded the Cafeteros for holding their own after the expulsion and scoring an equaliser in the first half thanks to Juan Quintero's clever low free kick in the 39th minute. The goal was confirmed by goal-line technology.

Colombia struggled for goals in qualifying and, down to 10 men so early in the game and without injured star man James Rodriguez from the off, it was proving to be a frustrating afternoon.

Colombia simply could not get out, and it was no surprise whatsoever when Osako scored what proved to be the victor, heading home a corner taken by the substitute, Keisuke Honda.

Having spent the season on loan at Bayern Munich, Rodriguez was reported to be suffering from muscle fatigue and hasn't been able to recover in time for the match with Japan, despite the fact he trained on Monday.
