  • Apple to Provide More Precise Location Data for iPhone 911 Calls

Apple this morning announced a new feature in iOS 12 which will automatically share your location with first responders when U.S. users dial 911 using their iPhone. It will see the location of US iPhone users shared with dispatch responders during 911 calls.

The National Emergency Number Association says that of the 240 million calls made to 911 each year, over 80 percent are made from mobile phones.

Credit: AppleThe tech giant will launch a new emergency response feature in its new iOS 12 software later this year, Apple revealed in a statement on Monday (June 18).

'When every moment counts, these tools will help first responders reach our customers when they most need assistance'.

Apple said it's adding the new technology ahead of a Federal Communications Commission rule set for 2021 that requires phone carriers be able to locate emergency callers within 50 meters 80 percent of the time.

Apple's HELO tech doesn't share your exact location - instead, it estimates your location by using your cell tower's data, as well as other sources like Global Positioning System and WiFi Acess Points which can be used by 911 responders. But outdated systems make it hard for emergency call centres to pinpoint a mobile user's location, Apple said.

Euro falls on ECB's rate moves, end of QE by 2018
West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil futures were down 0.3 percent at $66.69 per barrel; Brent was down 1 percent at $75.20. Mr Draghi made the announcement at a news conference following the bank's meeting to discuss eurozone monetary policy.

That's important, considering many PSAPs are small, rural operations unable to quickly upgrade their systems to the latest new technologies.

The new iOS 12 feature aims to get accurate location data to first-responders more quickly, cutting emergency response times.

In iOS 12, scheduled for arrival in the fall, Apple will improve how first responders receive your location.

The location services at 911 call centers are based on outdated infrastructure from the era of landlines. Apple is working to speed things up for the full range of devices supported by iOS 12. iPhones and iPads will now be better than ever at delivering optimal performance while also prolonging battery life. Global Positioning System location data will also be used. Apple will also use technology from emergency technology company RapidSOS to share HELO location data with 911 centers.

"This is going to save a lot of lives", Wheeler said.
