  • CDC: Suicide Rates Rising Across US

The new CDC report states half of the country has seen a more than 30 percent increase in suicide rates since 1999.

Jarvis says the most important thing to do if you feel like someone you know is contemplating ending their life is to talk to them.

Bourdain's is the latest celebrity death linked to suicide, following the passing this week of the internationally renowned designer Kate Spade.

Many people who died by suicide, according to the report, had recently experienced hard life events such as relationship problems, physical ailments, financial stress and job or home loss.

Middle-age adults had the highest increase.

Suicides are rarely caused by a single factor, however.

Rural states, she explained, are still recovering from economic downturns and residents tend to be more isolated, without access to proper care.

Take the person to an emergency room or seek help from a medical or mental health professional.

Yet research has shown that almost 80 percent of people who die by suicide explicitly deny suicidal thoughts or intentions in their last communications, he added. It provides free and confidential support 24 hours a day, seven days a week for people in suicidal crisis or distress.

"Suicide is a public health crisis when you look at the numbers, and they keep going up".

In its report, the US government agency reports that in reported suicides that 54 percent of people who died by suicide did not have a known or reported mental health illness.

The suicides of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain this week reflect what federal health officials say is a rising trend nationwide. More than half did not have a known mental health diagnosis. You might say you're noticing behaviors that can be associated with thoughts of suicide, Buhse said, and then ask, "Are you thinking of killing yourself?" Rates in 49 of the 50 states rose between 1999 and 2016, the most recent year for which rates are available.

Bourdain and Spade died at 61 and 55, respectively - an age cohort with strikingly high suicide rates in the USA, according to the CDC.

In Missouri, the state has also struggled with funding for suicide prevention.

But suicide rates are increasing for middle-aged men and women, like Bourdain and Spade. But other problems - such as the loss of a relationship, financial setbacks, substance abuse and eviction - were common precursors, both among those who had a mental health diagnosis and those who did not.

Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky each saw double digit increases in suicides between 1999 and 2016. Habitual users of opioids were twice as likely to attempt suicide as people who did not use them.

In addition to talking with loved ones, finding resources is key.
