US To Help North Korea Upon Nuclear Surrender - Pompeo

"If North Korea takes bold action to quickly denuclearize, the United States is prepared to work with North Korea to achieve prosperity on the par with our South Korean friends", Pompeo added.

Pompeo spoke to reporters on the State Division a day after getting back from a visit to Pyongyang to barter with the North Korean chief and retrieve three People held by the regime.

Mr. Pompeo said US aim was clear - "to ensure that North Korean doesn't possess the capacity to threaten, not only the United States but the world, with nuclear weapons".

Pompeo's remarks come ahead of Trump's historic meeting with Kim, which is set to take place next month in Singapore.

Contrasting the wealth of South Korea to the poverty and deprivation of the North, Pompeo said the Trump administration is willing to provide assistance to North Korea if Kim meets US demands to forfeit its nuclear weapons.

The U.S. can create conditions for economic prosperity for the North Korean people, Pompeo said, but "it won't be U.S. taxpayers".

"Thank you, a very smart and gracious gesture!" However, there are lingering doubts about whether Kim would ever agree to fully relinquish the weapons he likely views as his only guarantee of survival.

During their meeting at a border truce village, Moon and Kim vaguely promised to work toward the "complete denuclearization" of the Korean Peninsula, but made no references to verification or timetables.

Pompeo also suggested that the US and North Korea could one day be "partners".

She said that the idea of the USA reducing its military footprint in South Korea wasn't on the table.

Kim declared his nuclear forced as complete in December, following the country's most powerful nuclear test to date in September and also three flight tests of intercontinental ballistic missiles created to reach the US mainland.

North Korea's announcement that it will blow up its nuclear testing site within the next couple of weeks is "good news", Pompeo said.

North Korea's state news agency criticized the Japanese government Saturday for urging a resolution to the issue of Pyongyang's abductions of Japanese nationals, claiming that the issue has already been resolved.

"Now that North Korea has accepted in principle that agreements should be verified, US negotiators should hold them to this standard for any subsequent agreement", said Adam Mount, a senior defense analyst at the Federation of American Scientists.

Some observers are concerned that South Korea's desire to build peaceful ties with the North may distance it over time from the USA policy of seeking nuclear disarmament at any cost.

While Kang sought to assure reporters that the USA and South Korea are unified on the matter, she was slightly more moderate on the possibility of relief, saying sanctions must remain in place "until we see visible, meaningful action taken by North Korea on the denuclearization track".

In June 2008, global broadcasters were allowed to air the demolishing of a cooling tower at the Nyongbyon reactor site, a year after the North reached an agreement with the U.S. and four other nations to disable its nuclear facilities in return for an aid package. "I think we have a good understanding, and I think there is complete agreement about what the ultimate objectives are".
