  • Yuma E. coli outbreak: 5 confirmed cases in Arizona, new warnings issued

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Friday expanded a health warning about contaminated lettuce, saying people should avoid whole heads and hearts of romaine lettuce that may have come from the Yuma region in Arizona.

The CDC has narrowed the origin of the outbreak to Yuma, Arizona and are warning consumers to not consume any type of romaine from the area. "If you or someone from your family recently ate romaine lettuce and are experiencing symptoms, please seek medical treatment immediately".

Alaskan authorities said none of the eight patients identified in the prison outbreak have been hospitalized and none have died. So far, no common grower, brand, distributor, or supplier has been identified as the specific source of the outbreak. One of the OH women was temporarily hospitalized after becoming ill.

"Ill people in Alaska reported eating lettuce from whole heads of romaine lettuce from the Yuma, Arizona growing region", the CDC stated.

If you do not know if the lettuce is romaine, do not eat it and throw it away. If you find yourself sick, write down what you've eaten, contact your doctor and report your illness to your local health department. Five of them developed a type of kidney failure associated with an E. coli illness called hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can be life-threatening.

The French foreign ministry has said it is "highly likely that evidence and essential elements disappear from the site". He added the sites the team wants to visit were under the control of the Russian military police.

The symptoms of eating E. coli infected vegetables include stomach cramps, (bloody) diarrhea and vomiting. If someone has eaten the lettuce and not gotten sick, it should still be thrown away.

The current CDC warnings cover whole heads and hearts of romaine lettuce, as well as chopped romaine, salads and salad mixes that contain romaine. Ask the waiter if the romaine lettuce is coming from the Yuma area. Although most recover in one week, it could lead to kidney failure.

People usually get sick from Shiga toxin-producing E. coli 2 to 8 days after swallowing the germ.

The initial outbreak was reported April 10, with 17 people from seven states affected. Almost all - 41 of 43 - said they had eaten romaine lettuce in the week before they were interviews.
