Apple Developing Curved iPhone Display, Touchless Control Technology

Curved displays and touchless gesture control could be the next major changes to the iPhone.
The work comes as the Cupertino, California-based smartphone pioneer looks to make its gadgets stand out.
In the fourth quarter, Apple was responsible for about 20 percent of smartphone shipments following the launch of the iPhone X and iPhone 8, beating out second place Samsung and Huawei, according to IDC.
The tech is also different to Apple's existing FaceID camera sensors, which use facial recognition to unlock your iPhone X.
A Bloomberg report from well-connected Mark Guttman says users would be able to control the iPhone by moving their fingers in close proximity to the screen. In fact, at least one of them could be at least two years away from shipping. Still, other companies have implemented similar features in the past. To note, the current generation of the iPad Pro already has trimmed down bezels on the sides, but the upcoming 2018 model will have the top and bottom bezels further reduced. The 10th anniversary iPhone's OLED display curves slightly at the bottom though it isn't that visible to the human eye. Google has its own take on the tech, secretly experimenting with it within an initiative called Project Soli.
But Apple's feature will reportedly be baked into the iPhone's screen rather than through a separate sensor or via a motion sensor in the phone's border. Back when including everything but the kitchen sink in phones was a thing, Samsung allowed users to control their Galaxy S devices by doing things like waving their hand over the display to scroll.
Apple is preparing something new for its future iPhones.
To access adequate OLED supplies for these new devices, Apple is expanding its sourcing from Samsung to also include LG Display, the people said.
