  • Mauricio Pochettino fears VAR will 'kill emotion' of game after Wembley chaos

"Our decision to vote in favour of VAR was not taken lightly, but after lengthy research are confident it is a move that is in the best interests of the game".

Players risk a booking if they attempt to influence any official to use VAR and managers or other non-playing club staff risk being sent to the stand if they do the same, or encroach on the area where the referee is reviewing footage. With the introduction of VAR, FIFA plans to eradicate this criticism from the game.

Former Premier League referee Chris Foy told BBC Radio 5 live that VAR is suffering from "teething problems" and decisions need to be made quicker. The ultimate power lies in the hands of the on-field referee only. The idea when VAR was introduced, that it should only be used to correct "clear and obvious mistakes" rather than make minor judgement calls, seemed to have escaped his head. It was first introduced in the MLS of the USA.

Several of Europe's top divisions have been trialling the use of VAR throughout the season, with differing levels of success.

It has already been implemented in top European leagues including the German Bundesliga and Italy's Serie A.

VAR has proved it is not the future cutting-edge technology which will allow the game to develop even more.

The A-League was the first top level domestic competition in the world to implement the VAR system, serving as a Federation Internationale de Football Association test case when it was introduced in Round 26 of the 2016-17 season. This has led to questions being raised over the necessity of using it.

It is expected that any domestic league or competition would have to adopt VAR protocols for every game.

It is now being used in selected domestic cup matches.

'Feinting to kick the ball once the kicker has completed the run-up (feinting in the run-up is permitted); the referee cautions the player, ' a law states under the section offences and sanctions in the rules of football. It leaves the fans clueless.

Thus spectators will feel unable to fully celebrate until the VAR confirmation has gone through, completely ruining that unique moment of spontaneous joy that follows a goal. But no explanation is provided as to what the starting point of "build-up" is.

When VAR was correctly used to reach the right conclusion in Chelsea's FA Cup replay against Norwich City in January, controversy still surrounded whether the fact Willian dived.

So the verdict was forced to remain unchanged and Burnic eventually had to leave the field when he should have stayed on. Yet the VAR should only be used to overturn a "clear and obvious" error.

"It's a massive competition, football and business and I'm not going to say yes or no, my opinion is not important", Pochettino added.

"The referee is always in charge of the game".

That is when VAR could come to the rescue.

There is a referee in the booth with access to a video monitor in constant communication with the official on the pitch.
