  • The lawyers representing the seven adult Turpin children say they continue to recover from their years of abuse at the Corona Regional Medical Center. The six younger siblings have been split between two foster homes

Authorities said the home reeked of human waste and evidence of starvation was obvious, with the oldest sibling weighing only 82 pounds.

Almost six weeks after the siblings were rescued from the family's "house of horrors" in Perris, California, the six underage siblings have been discharged to live in two foster care homes, while the seven adult children continue to recover at the Corona Regional Medical Center. The children had supposedly been home-schooled, but some had such little understanding of the outside world they didn't know what medicine or a police officer was.

More than a month after their parents' arrest, the siblings were undergoing treatment at multiple hospitals, the adults separated from the children.

Attorneys Jack Osborn and Caleb Mason, who represent the seven adult children of the couple, told CBS News that they are learning to make decisions on their own.

The seven adult siblings are still recovering at the Corona Medical Center in California where hospital staff converted an area just for them, according to CBS, where they are being exposed to everything from "Harry Potter" to iPads.

The children have reportedly agreed to testify against their parents should the case go to trial.

The older children have plans to visit the beach, mountains and movies, and in the long term, attend college and pursue careers.

"I just want you to understand just what special individuals they are". 'They all have their own aspirations and their own interests and now they may have an opportunity to address those, which is really exciting'.

As the Turpin children grow to trust their liberators, court officials said, they might open up more - and possibly reveal more about life in the Southern California house. David Turpin is additionally charged with one count of lewd acts on a child under 14 years old.

They're "starting to make plans for their future", she said.

Their parents, David and Louise Turpin are due to appear in court again for a procedural hearing nearly six weeks after they were arrested and charged with torturing and starving their 13 children.

After suffering years of abuse, the Turpin's 17-year-old daughter managed to escape their home and she ran to the authorities for help. Both David and Louise pled not guilty to the new charges.

"We have amended the complaint to file three new charges on both defendants of child abuse, and one new count against only defendant Louise Turpin of felony assault".

David and Louise Turpin have each been charged with 12 counts of torture, 12 counts of false imprisonment, seven counts of abuse of a dependent adult and six counts of child abuse.

Defence attorneys, who have asked the public to remember that their clients have a presumption of innocence, told the judge that they were sceptical they could be ready to proceed with a preliminary hearing of the case because of the voluminous amount of evidence turned over by prosecutors. They are each being held on $9 million bond.
