Ontario lost 59,300 part-time positions and created 8,500 full-time spots.

At the same time the labour pool rose to 200,600 people last month compared with 196,800 in January 2017.

"The Canadian economy experienced a very large setback in January, but it also needs to be kept in perspective - we had outstandingly strong job growth over the course of a year ago", Craig Alexander, chief economist for the Conference Board of Canada, said in an interview.

The unemployment rate in Kitchener-Waterloo fell to 5.1 per cent, but only because of 2,600 drop in the local labour force.

Nationally, the survey revealed that the number of paid employee positions also experienced a significant loss last month by shedding 112,000 positions.

Wage growth also received a boost in January, a month that saw Ontario lift its minimum wage.

Some economists said it's possible Ontario's minimum wage increase played a role in those declines, but noted it's important not to read too much into one month of data.

"The concentration of the job loss in Ontario and the focus upon lost part-time jobs in that province will no doubt feed debate on whether large minimum wage hikes took a toll on employment", Scotiabank's Derek Holt wrote in a note to clients.

Greater Victoria's labour force swelled to more than 200,000 in January, though that surge in numbers coincided with the region's unemployment rate rising slightly to 3.9 per cent, the second lowest in the country.

The unemployment rate in Medicine Hat has once again gone up.

Ontario's mandatory minimum hourly rate is set for another bump in January 2019, when it will rise to $15.

The nation's economy shed the most jobs at 88,000 since 2009 in January following two months of gains. "The unemployment rate is still low with the economy remaining close to full employment".

"We also need to watch to see if our community is affected by the loss of part-time work like elsewhere in Ontario". By comparison, the number of people who identified as self-employed workers - often seen as a less desirable category that includes unpaid work in a family business - increased last month by 23,900.

"It doesn't change the broader narrative around the Bank of Canada". "At the very least, we can dismiss any chance the Bank hikes [interest rates] in March, and April is now looking more like a long shot as well".
