"Respect for other countries' independence and geographical borders will lead to promotion of security in the region".

He made the remarks during a meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu in Tehran on Wednesday.

The Turkish military intervention codenamed "Operation Olive Branch" started in mid-January, and has focused on combatting Kurdish militant or terrorist groups such as the Democratic Union Party (PYD) and the People's Protection Units (YPG), the latter of which is backed by the United States.

The visit by Cavusoglu came as Turkey launched a major military campaign in the northwestern Syrian city of Afrin against US -backed Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG).

Cavusoglu visited Iran's capital Tehran on Wednesday for talks on bilateral and regional issues.
