At least two people have died and scores have been injured after an Amtrak service traveling from NY to Miami collided with a freight train early Sunday morning.

The train had left New York Penn Station and was bound for Miami when Amtrak says it "came in contact with a CSX freight train around 2:35 am in Cayce".

The Amtrak train travelling between NY and Miami collided with the CSX freight train and derailed in Cayce, near Columbia, the state's capital, at around 2.30am yesterday. The crash happened yesterday near the state capital Columbia.

Amtrak says Train 91 was operating between NY and Miami, and came in contact with a CSX freight train.

TWO train workers are dead and 110 passengers have been injured in a horror crash in SC.

This is the third fatal crash with Amtrak train in less than two months.

On December 18, a train derailed near DuPont, Washington, DC, killing three people and injuring 62 passengers and crew members.

Amtrak Train 91 was traveling between New York and Miami with when it collided with a CSX freight train in Cayce South Carolina derailing the lead engine and some passenger cars Amtrak said in a statement

After the crash, law enforcement officials and emergency crews responded to the scene to free the passengers from the wreckage and transport them to a nearby middle school for shelter.

Michael Kempf, the 54-year-old train engineer from Savannah, Georgia, was killed in the crash, she said.

This photo shows passenger cars derailed after the collision. Officials are estimating about 5,000 gallons of fuel has spilled.

The injured were in hospitals as emergency responders and police were working on the scene.

Lexington County spokesperson Harrison Cahill said injuries ranged from broken bones to slight scratches, according the The State.

In a statement reported by Reuters, Amtrak President Richard Anderson said the freight train company had "padlocked the switch off the mainline to the siding, causing the collision".
