  • Member Of German Nationalist Anti-Islamization Party Resigns After Converting To Islam

"Only afterwards was it known that he had converted to Islam", Friese was quoted by Reuters.

Founded in February 2013, the AfD focuses on so-called "soft" Euroscepticism, generally supporting Germany's membership in the European Union but slamming further European integration, unchecked immigration and the existence of the euro.

Wagner made a decision to renounce AfD even though the party in itself said that it did not have any problem with its former leader despite his conversion to Islam.

Wagner, for his part, confirmed his resignation during an interview with the newspaper Der Tagesspiegel, saying that "it is a private matter". Kalbitz wrote in an official AfD Facebook post on Wednesday that "Islam does not belong to Germany".

Israeli forces detain 18 Palestinians, including husband and wife, during raids
Pence has issued no criticism of Israel's half-century occupation of the West Bank during his visit. It was not immediately clear whether his exhortation was widely observed.

Arthur Wagner, AfD's vice-president in the eastern Havelland district, declined to make a comment on his decision. "I also do not think it is a problem for the majority in the party".

In the Brandenburg state committee, he was responsible for churches and religious communities.

Making plain that he hadn't stepped down because of his new religious affiliation, Wagner said that "there was no pressure" and that "it has not changed anything". But as other possibilities for a deal with non-AfD parties in parliament have been unsuccessful, the Social Democratic Party has voted to begin coalition talks again. Arnoud van Doorn had been a member of the nationalist Dutch Freedom Party, led by anti-Islam firebrand Geert Wilders, but renounced the party to take up the Islamic faith. Frauke Petry, a former AfD head who was considered a moderate, argued in 2015 that officers should shoot migrants or refugees entering Germany, if necessary.

"The growing Islamization of Germany poses an urgent challenge for its public and state order, cultural identity and the internal peace of our country", Gauland said. Some of the ads had a picture of a pig with the caption, "Islam?"
