  • This year's Women's Marches are all about mobilizing women to vote in run for and win elections. Corey Rangel

The rallies - which are definitely a little smaller than they were the first time around, but still a massive show of force - took place in rallies in Washington, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and about 250 other cities across the country.

LOS ANGELES Hundreds of thousands of women's marchers amassed at parks and city halls throughout California on Saturday to condemn sexual harassment, violence against women and the presidency of Donald Trump.

Determined to not let the momentum die, protesters once again converged on hundreds of cities - at home and overseas - for the second annual Women's March, seeking not only to unite in a call for social change but also to channel their fury into voter action. In New York City alone, more than 120,000 people were interested in attending the 2018 event, according to a Facebook event made by its organizers.

Trump's main opponent in the 2016 presidential election, Democratic former US first lady Hillary Clinton, said the Women's March past year was "a beacon of hope and defiance".

And true to form, Mr Trump was quick to needle the protesters by urging more women to flood the streets and celebrate the "unprecedented economic success and wealth creation that has taken place over the last 12 months".

It's been exactly a year since the historic 2017 Women's March, which brought millions out to protest Trump's inauguration, flooding the streets of the nation with pink knitted hats.

Mayor Eric Garcetti estimated 500,000 people were at the rally - one of many being held on the anniversary of Trump's inauguration.

"When the government shuts down, women still march", she said.

"Today we're sending Trump another message, look out your window", Toni Van Pelt, president of the National Organization for Women, told marchers in Washington.

The past year has proven to be a landmark year for women in the fight for gender equality.

Mr Simpson, who works for consulting firm Fusion GPS , was asked to research then presidential candidate Donald Trump in 2015/16. Simpson told the House committee about research the firm did into Trump's alleged shady business dealings.

Thousands gathered in Washington, D.C., though WUSA9 reports the turnout was smaller than last year's 500,000.

Organisers hope to build on the energy felt by Mr Trump's opponents after his surprise election victory in 2016 and channel it into gains for progressive candidates in November's midterm elections, using the theme "Power to the Polls".

Sixteen-year-old Caley Medina said she wanted to spread her activism beyond her high school campus, so she came to the march with her mom and brother.

Organizers said the platform for the 2018 women's march is expanding.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and New York Sen.

"I'm sick to my stomach every day, and I find myself working on not being angry, because there's only so much we can do".

In Washington, the Lincoln Memorial saw a group of protesters who held large block letters to spell "impeach".

"I'd be lying if I said that I'm not dispirited and discouraged over having to march yet again to register our opposition to this disastrous first year of the Trump presidency", said Peggy Taylor, a NY tour guide.

Trump took to Twitter to offer support to the women and all that were participating in women across the country.
