  • Aus Open: Djokovic survives brutal heat test

Angelique Kerber thrashed Maria Sharapova in straight sets in the third round of the Australian Open on Saturday.

Former world No.1s and ex-Australian Open champions Maria Sharapova of Russian Federation and Angelique Kerber of Germany on Thursday eased past Latvia's Anastasija Sevastova and Croatia's Donna Vekic respectively to set up an intriguing match in the third round of the Australian Open. Chung beat fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev 5-7, 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 six days after a win over No. 32 Mischa Zverev in the first round.

Sharapova will leave Melbourne with some positive takeaways.

Sharapova, who will turn 31 in April, has farther to go to crank back her clock.

Kerber's year-end ranking dropped from No. 1 in 2016 to 21 a year ago, when she failed to defend her Australian or U.S. Open titles.

Six-time Australian Open champion Djokovic continued his comeback from six months out with an injured right elbow, beating No. 21 Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-2, 6-3, 6-3.

Halep has been travelling under the radar somewhat at Melbourne Park as she works her way towards a maiden Grand Slam title. "I'm nearly dead", Halep said of the match which equaled Chanda Rubin's win over Arantxa Shanchez Vicario in 1996 - also 48 games - for the Australian Open record in terms of most games.

Simona Halep survived an almighty scare as American Lauren Davis pushed her all the way in a titanic three-setter which lasted 3 hours and 44 minutes. "I will try to continue my run and playing good like I played also here like the last two matches".

Bruce McArthur, 66, charged with murder of missing men
McArthur appeared in a College Park courtroom via video link just before 10 a.m. on Friday. Chief Mark Saunders defended how police handled the case.

"It's good to win on my birthday and it's always a tough match against Donna". She's had success playing out here in these conditions on these courts.

"Angie is already one step ahead of everybody else because nobody else knows what it's like to win a Grand Slam", said the Australian Rennae Stubbs, a television analyst and former player.

Halep saved three match points while serving in the 22nd game of the third set at 0-40, and Davis saved five break points in the next game to keep the contest alive.

Halep will play the victor of Saturday's later match between local hope Ashleigh Barty and Naomi Osaka.

In the next round, Garcia is scheduled to face Madison Keys of the United States, the 17th seed, who got the better of Romania's Ana Bogdan 6-3, 6-4.

Also advancing were 2009 U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro, No. 19 Tomas Berdych, No. 25 Fabio Fognini, No. 26 Adrian Mannarino and Chung Hyeon.

But there will be no Konta, who lost 6-4, 7-5 to world No 123 Croatian-American Bernarda Pera.

"It feels awesome. I was ready to leave on Monday and then they told me I'm in, so I was obviously excited, " Pera said.
