  • Amazon increased monthly prime membership fee by 18 percent 2012018

As of today, if you're paying the monthly rate for Amazon Prime in the United States, expect to pay $12.99 during the next billing cycle beginning on February 18.

Amazon is jacking up the prices of its Prime membership monthly plan by almost 20 percent.

Beginning Feb. 18, existing Amazon Prime Monthly and Prime Student members looking to renew their memberships will pay the increased rate.

The new fee will be $12.99 a month, up from $10.99, but customers may also opt for an annual membership of $99, which is unchanged. The company did say earlier this month that it shipped more than 5 billion items via its Prime service in 2017.

Annual Prime members continue to pay $99. But it's clear that Prime is the backbone of Amazon's e-commerce engine and it's being forced to carry ever more weight. We also continue to introduce new, popular and award-winning Prime Originals... Amazon claims it doesn't have a preference whether people pay monthly or annually, but the price jump incentivizes locking into a 12-month plan.

U.S. withholds millions of dollars in promised Palestinian food aid
She said the instead asking other governments to "step up to the plate" and increase funding for the agency. Living conditions in Gaza, Syria, the West bank and elsewhere in the region are particularly tough.

That same fee is jumping for the monthly program for students, as well, from $5.49 to $6.49.

The reason? Prime is becoming more valuable. "Members also enjoy a growing list of unique benefits like Prime Music, Prime Reading, exclusive products and much more".

Industry experts believe the increase is meant to push customers to the more expensive annual Prime package and as a result increases bottom line revenue for the online giant.

The Amazon Prime Video series will be a prequel to the iconic trilogy of films directed by Peter Jackson.

This price change goes into effect today and will affect any monthly renewals after February 18.
