Donald Trump has "got the message" that many Londoners are staunchly opposed to his policies and actions, mayor Sadiq Khan says. The move, which ended a 200-year US association with London's Grosvenor Square, was part of American efforts to secure diplomatic staff in compounds - a push tied to terror concerns after al-Qaida bombings at two USA embassies in East Africa a decade ago.
However, the decision to move the embassy from Grosvenor Square in London's Mayfair to a new development at Nine Elms in Battersea was taken under the presidency of George W Bush in 2008 before Obama was elected.
Christian Warman, director of prime central London estate agency Tedworth Property, defended the decision to move the embassy, suggesting it was "very sensible", although he agreed Grosvenor Square was one of the best addresses in London.
The $1 billion construction project overlooking the River Thames began in November 2013 and was wholly funded by the sale of other USA properties in London.
In a Twitter message shortly before midnight Thursday, Trump implicitly rejected reports that the trip - never announced but widely assumed to be in February - was being scrapped over concerns that the us leader would be met with widespread protests.
The problem with that rationale is that Trump's tweet misrepresented the history of the U.S. Embassy move.
Details of the official state visit by Trump, planned for later this year, are still being ironed out.

It is now expected that the US Embassy will instead be opened by US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.
Donald Trump has cancelled a visit to Britain next month to open the new U.S. embassy in London amid fears of mass protests.
In light of Trump's cancellation, a spokesperson for Downing Street maintained their previous position, stating: "an invitation has been extended and accepted, but no date has been set". We celebrate and welcome good men and woman of all creeds no matter the colour of their skin or the colour of their flag.
Prime Minister Theresa May was the first world leader to visit Mr. Trump as president, and last week insisted that he "will be coming to this country".
Former UKIP leader Nigel Farage said on BBC Radio 4's Today programme that it was disappointing that Mr. Trump had called off his visit.
"The US is the biggest single investor in the United Kingdom - yet Khan & Corbyn seem determined to put this crucial relationship at risk", Johnson said in a tweet.
