Because space in News Feed is limited, showing more posts from friends and family and updates that spark conversation means we'll show less public content, including videos and other posts from publishers or businesses. Those include personal posts from friends or family, and especially those looking for a suggestion or sparking a conversation.

"As we roll this out, you'll see less public content like posts from businesses, brands, and media", Zuckerberg said in a post on his Facebook page.

Instead of a feed full of updates from media companies (or that clothing store you followed for a discount one time), the future news feed should be full of content you find engaging. The move seeks to encourage more meaningful interactions between users and their friends and online contacts.

Facebook Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg speaks on stage during the annual Facebook F8 developers conference in San Jose, California, U.S., April 18, 2017.

Zuckerberg says that according to research, people use social media to stay in touch with people they care about, and that can have a positive impact on their overall well-being.

In a series of public comments, Mark Zuckerberg acknowledged what many people already knew: Facebook has become an unpleasant place that can make users feel lonely and frustrated.

While Mr Zuckerberg described the move as being created to bring people closer together and foster more "meaningful social interactions", analysts noted that it comes amid criticism of the world's leading social network on various fronts.

"We believe these changes will be beneficial to Facebook in the medium and long term". It has also been questioned about how its algorithms might have prioritized inaccurate news in News Feeds, thereby, influencing the recent American presidential election. It will also allow users to access their Facebook accounts and other social media sites such as Twitter. Since then, annual sales have soared from US$5.1 billion to an estimated US$40.2 billion past year - and the news feed has become increasingly crowded with advertisements and posts from brands and publications.

"No matter how well we do on Facebook and how great our videos are, making high-quality videos itself does not bring us any profit", said Cho. Many creators who post videos on Facebook prompt discussion among their followers, as do posts from celebrities. The algorithm change will make it more hard to attract new audiences, however. In Groups, people often interact around public content.

Facebook's focus used to be connecting people.

At the time he was talking about Russian interference and doubling investment in people to prevent it, but the language was also hinting at Thursday's announcement that gives additional weight being placed on friends and family posts over pages and businesses in news feeds.

But even without Facebook's struggle with fake news, the changes were much needed.

"Pages making posts that people generally don't react to or comment on could see the biggest decreases in distribution".

The shift comes as experts reported a steep drop in interactions on the site.
