National Football League probing possible 'Rooney rule' breach in Raiders deal

  • Oakland Raiders owner Mark Davis left may have ignored the Rooney Rule in hiring head coach Jon Gruden. More

The Rooney Rule means teams have to interview at least one minority candidate before making a coaching hire and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport stated the Raiders complied with that rule.

On Thursday, NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said the league will "look into this".

Gruden isn't new to the Oakland Raiders either, since he was their head coach from 1998 to 2001.

The Fritz Pollard Alliance asked the National Football League to investigate the Raiders and whether they satisfied the Rooney Rule in a statement Wednesday, per Ben Volin of the Boston Globe.

"I have always felt a team can have a front-runner and minority candidates can compete against a front-runner, and sometimes they get selected", Mehri said.

Oakland moved quickly through the process of tabbing Gruden, taking him away from ESPN, and firing then-head coach Jack Del Rio. Davis also said he wouldn't have fired Del Rio if he didn't believe Gruden would take the job.

It was during the 1991 Nationals when Harding became the first American woman to land a triple axel jump in competition. In one instance depicted in the film, Golden throws a steak knife at her daughter, which lodges in Harding's arm.

Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie said Tuesday that he interviewed two minority candidates prior to Gruden's hiring.

Gruden's hire provoked some suspicion nearly immediately upon being reported last week.

The former Oakland quarterback, who played under Gruden, said he turned down a job as his quarterbacks coach, realizing the toll it would take on him to work for a man who, as a coach, famously sleeps three to four hours each night. After the controversial Tuck Rule game, the coach was traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Tom Flores was the first Hispanic coach to win a Super Bowl, while the Raiders also hired Hue Jackson as coach in 2011 and now employs McKenzie. Overall, he is 95-81 in 11 regular seasons and 100-85 including the postseason.

The new hire comes after the end of a disappointing 2017 season for the Raiders, who finished third in the division and failed to make the playoffs, after having high expectations from the previous year.
