GOP senators urge criminal probe of Trump dossier author

  • Judge: Trump tweets don't require more disclosure on dossier

Grassley and Graham, both members of the Senate Judiciary Committtee, have accused Steele of making false statements to the U.S. government about the "distribution" of the document's claims. The dossier forms much of the basis for Congress and the DOJ's investigation into aforementioned alleged ties between Trump and Russian Federation.

The memos written by a former British intelligence agent and Russia expert, Christopher Steele, made a series of allegations, including multiple secret meetings between Trump campaign officials and Russian agents.

An op-ed in the New York Times written by Glenn Simpson and Peter Fritsch, the former journalists and founders of investigative firm Fusion GPS, said congressional intelligence committees, which are conducting their own investigations into the Trump campaign, have been aware of the allegations for months. "In any event, it's up to the Justice Department to figure that out". This is the first criminal referral in the Russia Gate investigation to come from the GOP.

The Intelligence Committee has attempted to slap contempt citations on the department and the FBI for its investigation into claims of Russian collusion in the dossier. However, CNN's reporting shows a number of pieces of intelligence separate from the dossier raised concerns among USA national security officials and propelled an investigation.

A lawyer for Fusion GPS, which was initially paid by a conservative website tied to Republicans and then later by Democrats to carry out the research into Trump, criticized the senators for the referral and also for publicizing it.

"As we told the Senate judiciary committee in August, our sources said the dossier was taken so seriously because it corroborated reports the bureau had received from other sources, including one inside the Trump camp". "I'll continue to stand strong against any efforts to undermine Special Counsel Mueller's investigation, as well as the ongoing congressional investigations". "Getting to the bottom of what happened remains a top priority for me, as I hope it does for everyone on the Judiciary Committee". "If the same actions have different outcomes, and those differences seem to correspond to partisan political interests, then the public will naturally suspect that law enforcement decisions are not on the up-and-up".

In a cover letter to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and FBI Director Christopher Wray released by the committee, the senators say the referral relates to "certain communications between Christopher Steele and multiple USA news outlets regarding the so-called 'Trump dossier.'" The rest of the referral is classified and was not released.

The dossier, which began as an opposition research effort and became publicly known in early 2017, details Russian interference in the 2016 election and includes allegations that Russian operatives claim to have compromising personal and financial information about Trump.

The Democratic senator said it was "indisputable fact" that the probe of Russian meddling in the election and any possible Trump campaign role "was triggered by information completely independent from the dossier".

There are now three ongoing congressional investigations into allegations of Russian interference in the election and complicity by Donald Trump's campaign team.
