Donald Trump Terminated All Remaining Members of the HIV/AIDS Council

  • The Trump administration fired the remaining 16 members of the top White House advisory board on HIV and AIDS-related issues it was reported on Thursday. President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence are seen in the Oval Office on December

All 15 members received a letter informing they that their appointments to the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS had been cut off, according to a statement from the executive director of the council. The reasons why they were removed are still unknown.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday reportedly fired all remaining members of the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS (PACHA) via a letter delivered by FedEx.

The firings came Wednesday, and numerous members still had time remaining on their terms.

However, some former members have their own ideas. "Two, many of us, our terms were over earlier this year and we were sworn back in, and three were stayed on almost four months after an executive order was signed continuing the council", he said.

"To the best of my knowledge it's not a disbandment of the council altogether, but a dismissal of any pre-Trump nominees", he added, "which in my opinion might be more risky than not having a council at all". "Two, many of us, our terms were over earlier this year and we were sworn back in, and three were stayed on almost four months after an executive order was signed continuing the council".

It is not uncommon for administrations to purge government agencies of holdovers from the previous presidency so that it can hire its own personnel. After Barack Obama entered office his White House dismissed all PACHA’s members appointed during Georg

Six of the council's members had already resigned earlier this year, according to the Blade, in protest of the administration's apparent disregard for PACHA's mission and its fiscal year 2018 proposal to cut the Centers for Disease Control's HIV/AIDs budget by up to $150 million.

In September, Trump issued an executive order that continued PACHA and 31 other advisory bodies through fall 2019. Reports came out that Trump, behind closed doors and complaining about immigration statistics, was allegedly upset that tens of thousands of Haitians came to the US each year, telling advisers the immigrants from that nation "all have AIDS".

"In his first year in office, Trump has made a continuous effort to erase LGBTQ people and people living with HIV from the fabric of our country - actions that fly in the face of American values and that all fair-minded Americans will continue to push back against in the new year", tweeted Sarah Kate Ellis, the president and CEO of GLAAD, a gay rights advocacy group. But, what is clear is that Trump has no feasible plan for combating the virus, in the United States or elsewhere, nor does he have any interest in finding new treatments for those who are afflicted with AIDS.

He added: "It feels like retribution against members of the committee who have spoken out against the Trump administration for their inaction on issues related to HIV/AIDS". Their concerns should also be the president's concerns, and it's disheartening to see that Trump would rather gamble with their lives than actually do something helpful for them.
