While the award-winning actress barely features in the trailer, her daughter Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) does - and this time she's pregnant.
The first trailer for Mamma Mia!: Here We Go Again was released this morning, giving fans a first look at the sequel to the beloved onscreen ABBA musical that released in 2008. James plays the young Donna, whose story is told in flashbacks.
James is joined by Alexa Davies as young Rosie and Jessica Keenan Wynn as young Tanya, as they portray the three close pals at a younger age.
What's that now? Is Meryl Streep's iconic character Donna Sheridan.dead? "Your mother was the bravest person we ever knew", Rosie (played by Julie Walters) says to a pregnant Sophie. Joining the original cast is Lily James (Cinderella, Baby Driver), Universal Pictures will open in theaters on July 20, 2018. In the end, Sam's the man and, having been Donna's true love, ends up marrying her. Sophie has her answer, everyone's happy, they go off singing, and the story is finished. "She wasn't scared because she had me", it could read as her realizing she, too, can endure a pregnancy without her mother by her side. As for her fate, we'll just have to take a chance, take a chance, take a chicka-chance chance.
The character is nearly exclusively mentioned in the past tense, and there is little, if any, new footage of Streep.

What do you think of this new trailer?
The death of Streep's character was always going to happen, it is believed, and isn't at all related to the criticism she has received for allegedly knowing about disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein's sexual misconduct.
Streep's character was previously heard moaning: "Somebody up there has got it in for me". "I'm so glad you're here", Sophie says.
