Apple Admits To Slowing Older Phones Because Of Battery Issues

  • Geekbench Scores Appear to Confirm Apple is Slowing Down iPhones With Old Batteries [Chart]

iPhones, like many recent Android devices, do not have batteries that can be easily replaced by users.

The situation is prickly: More than 10 years after Apple introduced its first iPhone, the company says it's trying to deliver the "best experience" to customers by preventing unexpected power-related shutdowns.

However, Hadley said that he didn't think the fact that older iPhones slow down would disrupt sales of the newer iPhone 8 or iPhone X models.

Apple basically admits to the disingenuous behavior but insists they were only addressing units usiing old lithium batteries and not forcing us to upgrade to new phones.

If you think your older iPhone seems to run slower, you're not insane.

"If Apple can show that the slowdowns are relative to the number of cycles that a battery has - which is information that an iPhone likely tracks, since Macs do so already - then there might be some truth to their claims", said Michael Oh, chief technology officer and founder of TSP, a Boston-based Apple partner.

Bristol City knock Manchester United FC out of League Cup
Of course we don't want extra-time, of course we try to win the game in the 90 minutes - which is why I say they were lucky.

"Because degraded batteries last much less and end up with a lower voltage Apple's solution was to scale down CPU performance, it doesn't solve anything and is a bad experience... but it's better than having your device shutdown at 40% when you need it the most".

The company said its software updates for the iPhone 6, iPhone 6S, iPhone SE and iPhone 7 are created to "smooth out" peak power demands, prevent these surprise shutdowns and ultimately prolong the lifespan of batteries.

Apple insists the updates were made with a different goal in mind: It said the performance of lithium-ion batteries degrades over time, which can sometimes cause phones to suddenly shut down in order to protect their components.

"We've now extended that feature to iPhone 7 with iOS 11.2, and plan to add support for other products in the future", said the company in the statement. It will be applied to other Apple devices in the future.

But some customers say the company's strategy of dealing with the power demand pushes them to replace their older iPhones with newer models.

If you're curious about the status of your phone's battery you can download a free app, such as Battery Life from developer RBT Digital, or head into your local Apple Store to get it checked out. Or will they still upgrade to a new iPhone?
