  • Winter solstice 2017: What is it; when does it happen; Stonehenge connection

Regardless of where you live in the world, you can now watch the Winter Solstice LIVE from Newgrange, Co Meath on December 20 and 21.

Stonehenge draws hundreds of people every year for the winter solstice.

Each year, the OPW runs a Winter Solstice Lottery to select a handful of visitors from across the globe to witness the spectacular display in person.

The winter solstice (solstice is Latin for "sun standing still") happens at the same time for everyone on Earth.

Likely older than Stonehenge, the opening of this enclosed, mound-like structure is designed so that as the sun dawns on the morning of the winter solstice, light shoots down a tiny, cramped passage at a flawless angle to light an interior chamber.

Abbas also signed 22 agreements and worldwide treaties to strengthen the legal status of the state of Palestine on a global scale. The Palestinians want East Jerusalem, now occupied by Israel, as the capital of their future independent state.

More than a few ancient human cultures celebrated this time as the day the Sun returned from its waning beginning instead a period of longer days. Precisely how short that is varies with how far north or south you are-around the solstice, the sun never truly rises at the north pole. It means the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. Afterwards, it will continue until it reaches the summer solstice and the longest day of the year.

Solstices and equinoxes are often viewed as spiritual timesWhat's the difference between a solstice and an equinox?

Is the solstice on the same day every year?

This happens twice a year, mid-way between the summer and winter solstices, on March 21 and September 23.

The solstice always falls between the 19th and 22nd of December. That distinction is partially to make seasons more equal in length and partially to better reflect how temperatures change over the course of the year. One day after the solstice, the day will be one minute longer, and it will keep growing.
