  • The Toys R Us store on the Birchley Island at Oldbury, is one of those that would be preserved under the CVA deal

The loss-making British arm of the USA toy retailer boosted Roger McLaughlan's pay to £1.3 million ($2.2 million) in the year ended January 30, 2016, from £1 million and £356,000 in the previous two years, Frank Field, the chairperson of the House of Commons' works and pensions committee, said in a December 18 letter to Toys "R" Us U.K.'s current head, Stephen Knights.

The sources added that the decision over whether to back the CVA was a binary one for the PPF, but that if they voted against the restructuring, it would be very likely that Toys R Us would fall into administration, putting as many as 3,200 jobs at risk. That deal would lead to the loss of up to 800 jobs.

The retailer, which has 84 stores and employs 3,200 staff in the United Kingdom, has been loss-making for seven of the past eight years and in its latest accounts had an operating loss of £500,000 on sales of...

PPF is open to changing its vote if Toys "R" Us U.K. comes up with an "acceptable" way of tackling the pension shortfall, it said in a December 19 letter to Field.

When it announced plans for the CVA, Toys R Us said it had an ongoing arrangement to make additional contributions concerning the deficit and the insolvency process would not change that.

Chinese electric vehicle maker launches NIO
At its launch on Saturday, Nio introduced a battery charging plan with a rental subscription set at 1,200 yuan ($181) a month. Nio plans to build over 1,100 "Power Swap" charging stations and deploy over 1,200 "Power Mobile" vehicles by 2020, it added.

Malcolm Weir, director of restructuring and insolvency at the PPF, said the body had yet to decide how to vote: "We are seeking to fully understand the current position of the company, including its future potential, position of the United States parent and the reported historic financial transactions".

Work and pensions select committee chair Frank Field said: "It has also recently been reported that payments to the United Kingdom head of Toys R Us soared from £356,000 in 2014 to £1.3million for the year ending 30 January 2016and that the beneficiary of this surge in remuneration was the then managing director Roger McLaughlan".

Sources close to the process claim that Toys R Us' hands are tied as it doesn't have £9mln spare to inject.

All Toys R Us shops will remain trading through Christmas, but if the CVA is approved, those stores affected will begin closing from the spring.
