  • McCain's Absence Probably Won't Hurt The GOP's Tax Bill Vote

The bill has already passed the House of Representatives and Senate, but differences in each version needed to be reconciled before a final vote could take place.

CBS News reported that Senator John McCain will miss the Senate's vote on massive tax cuts this week, returning to Arizona instead to recuperate from cancer treatment.

In a statement provided by Mr. McCain's office on Sunday, Dr. Mark R. Gilbert, chief of the neuro-oncology branch at the National Institutes of Health's National Cancer Institute, offered an upbeat assessment of the senator's health.

McCain was admitted to Walter Reed Hospital on Wednesday due to the "normal side effects" of his cancer treatments, ' his office said.

"He is grateful for the excellent care he continues to receive, and appreciates the outpouring of support from people all over the country", the statement said.

McCain's daughter, Meghan, tweeted on Sunday: "My father is doing well and we are all looking forward to spending Christmas together in Arizona". Still, Fox News is told that Republicans believe they still have enough votes to advance the package - as early as Tuesday night - even if McCain is out.

The passage of the tax bill, however, does not hinge on McCain's support because the GOP has a 52-48 vote advantage in the Senate. "An evaluation of his underlying cancer shows he is responding positively to ongoing treatment".

Cyril Ramaphosa Wins ANC Leadership Battle in South Africa
He was the favoured candidate of investors, business leaders, labour unionists and the ANC's communist party allies. But now as ANC leader, Ramaphosa is likely to become the country's next president after elections in 2019.

Earlier Sunday, after speaking with McCain's wife, Cindy, President Donald Trump told reporters that McCain was having a "very tough time".

McCain's closest friend in the Senate, Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said he hadn't spoken to McCain but planned to do so over the holidays.

McCain, an 81-year-old former prisoner of war and 2008 Republican presidential nominee was diagnosed in July with a brain tumor known as a glioblastoma, after doctors found a blood clot over his left eye during a routine checkup.

"They've headed back, but I understand he'll come if we ever needed his vote, which hopefully we won't", Mr. Trump said.

But McCain's condition has appeared to worsen in recent weeks.

McCain is expected to return to Washington in January. He suffered a minor tear in his right Achilles tendon, forcing him to wear a walking brace.
