Russian Federation said on Monday that it was willing to become "an honest mediator" between Israelis and Palestinians, as the United Nations Security council vote revealed the global and united opposition to President Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

It affirmed "that any decisions and actions which purport to have altered the character, status or demographic composition of the Holy City of Jerusalem have no legal effect, are null and void and must be rescinded in compliance with relevant resolutions of the Security Council".

Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid said that the resolution reflects the worldwide community's rejection towards US President Donald Trump's decision that aims at changing the status of Jerusalem.

He will discuss in Paris the establishment of an worldwide mechanism to replace the United States as a mediator for the peace process, based on the French initiative previous year, which culminated in a peace conference attended by 25 foreign ministers from Arab and European countries and the United States, but issued a statement without clear mechanisms or a time limit.

In his opening remarks to the Palestinian leadership meeting Monday evening, President Mahmoud Abbas said Palestinians will return to the United Nations to seek full membership for Palestine, while announcing a series of countermeasures against the USA move.

"The fact that this veto is being done in defense of American sovereignty and in defense of America's role in the Middle East peace process is not a source of embarrassment for us", said Haley.

Abbas also signed 22 agreements and worldwide treaties to strengthen the legal status of the state of Palestine on a global scale.

NPR's Michele Kelemen reported for newscast that Egypt sponsored the resolution in order to "demonstrate that much of the world opposes Trump's action, including US allies on the security council, Britain and France, who see Jerusalem as a shared capital of Israel and a future Palestinian state". "It's a full bias to the occupation and to the aggression". US Ambassador Nikki Haley who cast the veto slammed the rejected resolution as "an insult".

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ahmed Abu Zeid expressed regret in a written statement. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ahmed Abu Zeid said the resolution reflected the worldwide community's rejection of Trump's decision aimed at changing the status of Jerusalem.

Trump abruptly reversed decades of USA policy this month when he recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital, generating outrage from Palestinians and the Arab world and concern among Washington's western allies.

Trump's announcement triggered denunciations and demonstrations around the world.

14 out of 15 members in the UNSC voted in favor of the resolution which opposed the recognition of Jerusalem city as the capital of Israel.

"Our view is that the issue of Jerusalem is a final status issue, that Jerusalem should be a shared capitol for Israelis and for Palestinians, and the UK Embassy, for now, will remain in Tel Aviv". The Palestinians want East Jerusalem, now occupied by Israel, as the capital of their future independent state.

It demanded that all member-states not recognise any actions that are contrary to United Nations resolutions on the status of the city.

That resolution, which had 14 votes in favor, "reaffirmed ... that Israel's establishment of settlements in Palestinian territory occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem, had no legal validity, constituting a flagrant violation under worldwide law and a major obstacle to the vision of two States living side-by-side in peace and security, within internationally recognized borders". "Such a position of China will not change", he said.

The proposal calls for advancing a political settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian issue on the basis of the two-state solution, upholding a common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security concept, further coordinating and strengthening concerted efforts for peace, and promoting peace with development.
