The US is set on publicly blaming Pyongyang for carrying out an unprecedented cyber attack, which caused widespread destruction to around the world earlier this year.

Within days of the attack in May, North Korea fell under suspicion.

In an op-ed published in The Wall Street Journal, Homeland Security Advisor Tom Bessert wrote that North Korea was "directly responsible" for the malware that "cost billions".

Bossert said those responsible for carrying out cyber-attacks against the United States would be held accountable, but he did not mention specific actions Washington was considering taking against Pyongyang.

The public shaming of North Korea, which has not been confirmed by the White House, is created to hold the regime accountable for its actions and "erode and undercut their ability to launch attacks", the official told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

The US is not the only country that attributes the WannaCry attack to North Korea, Bossert adds.

"We do not make this allegation lightly". "It is based on evidence". The malware targeted several hospitals in the United Kingdom, as well as banks and various other infrastructures and companies worldwide, causing malfunctions in critical sectors. "We are not alone with our findings, either".

President Donald Trump "has already pulled many levers of pressure to address North Korea's unacceptable nuclear and missile developments, and we will continue to use our maximum pressure strategy to curb Pyongyang's ability to mount attacks, cyber or otherwise".

He called on governments and businesses to work together to reduce the risks of cyber-attacks and for harsher punishments for the groups and individuals behind them. He noted that the Trump administration has banned the use of Kaspersky software from government systems over concerns that the software could abet Russian espionage, and that the government has also charged Iranian hackers who attacked usa companies such as HBO.

In May 2017, the global WannaCry cyber attack targeted computers around the world that used the Windows operating system.

Lazarus Group have in the past been accused of being responsible for the 2014 hack of Sony Pictures Entertainment that destroyed files, leaked corporate communications and led to the departure of top studio executives.
