Michael McFaul, who served as ambassador to Russian Federation under former President Obama, said on MSNBC that the call was "not in the national interest".

The call came Thursday, after Putin used his annual news conference to praise the USA financial markets' rise and other "quite serious achievements" under Trump, whom he said he was on first-name terms with.

In his press conference, Putin pointed to the booming U.S. stock market as a sign that Trump was successfully managing the economy.

He said Mr Trump had made "some fairly serious achievements", pointing specifically to the sharp rise in USA stock markets.

The White House said Trump thanked Putin for "acknowledging America's strong economic performance".

He praised Mr Trump's "accomplishments", saying: "I'm not the one to evaluate the (US) President's work".

"(But) we are objectively seeing that there have been some major accomplishments, even in the short time he has been working. "With all due respect to President Trump's opposition in the United States, these are objective factors". "My worst enemies, they walk out [from sessions of Congress commissions] and they say 'There is no collusion, but we'll continue to look'". "This is evidence of investors' trust in the USA economy", Putin said.

The Kremlin made a point of noting that Mr Trump initiated the call.

He also accused those investigating potential collusion between Russian Federation and the 2016 Trump presidential campaign of damaging the United States political situation, "incapacitating the president and showing a lack of respect to voters who cast their ballots for him".

Macierewicz said in a Thursday interview with Polish Radio 24: "Coming from the mouth of the leader a country that is responsible for. the Smolensk tragedy, such words are really shocking".

The two leaders talked about the North Korea's nuclear weapons program, as well as other bilateral issues, the Kremlin said without elaborating.

Later, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson called for a "sustained cessation of North Korea's threatening behaviour" before talks could occur between Washington and Pyongyang.

He also welcomed the US' "awareness of reality" in the North Korea situation.

Mr Trump has repeatedly said all options remain on the table.
