  • Echo Show loses You Tube support Fire TV will soon follow

Responding to Google's actions, Amazon said: "Echo Show and Fire TV now display a standard web view of and point customers directly to YouTube's existing website".

Google on Tuesday said it would pull its YouTube apps from Amazon's Fire TV and Alexa-powered Echo Show starting next month. Why?

Amazon's Prime Video app also doesn't support Google's Cast feature, which allows users to cast TV shows and movies from their mobile device to a Chromecast-ready TV.

Google is hoping to pressure Amazon into selling Google's products by taking away access to the world's most widely watched video service.

Google has chose to cripple the Fire TV and Echo devices because Amazon refuses to sell Google's competing products - the Chromecast video and audio-streaming dongle and the Google Home smart speaker - as well as Google's Nest-branded smart home devices including internet-connected thermostats and home security systems.

'Given this lack of reciprocity, we are no longer supporting YouTube on Echo Show and FireTV.

YouTube reappeared on the Echo Show last month, but TechCrunch has claimed this was done without Google's input.

Google is hoping to twist Amazon's arm by holding back access to one of the world's most used video apps, however access to it via a browser will still be possible, though not as user friendly. Google's device is called Chromecast and has 36.9 million US users, according to research company eMarketer, while Amazon's Fire TV has 35.8 million users in the US.

The feud between Amazon and Google is escalating, and consumers may soon notice it in a pretty big way.

If you tried to watch YouTube on an Amazon Fire TV this week, you probably encountered a disconcerting message: "Starting on 1/1/2018, YouTube will not be available on this device".

YouTube blocked the Echo Show's work-around effective December 5.

Amazon said Google was "setting a disappointing precedent by selectively blocking customer access to an open website", but said they hoped to resolve the dispute.

The search giant added that Amazon has stopped selling some products from Nest, a device maker that, like Google, is a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc.

"This is a huge consumer issue, and I believe demonstrates the problem with such concentration of power with Google and Amazon", said Moorhead. This is also the same reason why customers won't be able to buy the Apple TV from Amazon. Amazon went a step further, though, and removed Nest products from their site last month.

YouTube was supposed to disappear from the Echo Show Tuesday, although Amazon has previously found ways to make unauthorized versions of YouTube available on that device.

The bickering between Google and Amazon has been going on several years as they have ratcheted up the competition with each other.
