A USA based Volkswagen AG executive Oliver Schmidt who pleaded guilty for his role in the Volkswagen emission scandal, has been sentenced to seven years in prison by a MI federal court.

Cox said Schmidt knew Volkswagen's vehicles weren't compliant with US emissions standards and sentenced him to consecutively serve 60 months in prison for the first count and 24 months for the second count in addition to fining him $400,000. He had pleaded guilty in August to charges he conspired to commit fraud and violate the US Clean Air Act. As per the reports, Schmidt had already moved back to Germany, and authorities only arrested him when he came back to America with his wife for a holiday.

Volkswagen engineer James Liang was sentenced to 40 months in prison and fined $200,000 in August for his role in the scandal. Oliver Schmidt will be sentenced Wednesday in Detroit federal court.

As the general manager of Volkswagen's engineering and environmental office in Michigan, Schmidt was responsible for the company's relationship with California's regulatory agency and reportedly fed federal regulators false information.

VW pleaded guilty as a corporation in March and agreed to pay billions of dollars in fines.

Schmidt traveled to the USA as the scandal was breaking on a mission to lie to U.S. and Californian authorities so Volkswagen could obtain regulatory approvals to sell 2016 model year diesel vehicles in the United States, according to prosecutors.

Half a dozen other former VW executives are still at large, but Schmidt's stiff sentence could lessen the odds of others indicted in the case being prosecuted, with many residing in Germany, the Detroit Free Press reported.

Schmidt, who oversaw emissions at VW's office in MI from 2012 to early 2015, met with key California regulators in 2015 but did not disclose the rogue software.
