Facebook announced on Monday it was trialling Messenger Kids in the United States, a standalone app aimed at children under 13 to chat with friends and family, controlled from a parent's main Facebook account.

Facebook Messenger kids launched is the free app which is aimed at kids under 13, who can't yet have their own accounts under Facebook's rules, though they can use this app to use the facebook account. Facebook is including "kid-appropriate masks, frames, stickers, and GIFs [to] spark conversation and laughter".

Even so, child heath experts like Dunaway remain skeptical.

Facebook launched Messenger Kids in an attempt to provide kids with a fun and secure way to use Facebook.

The NSPCC said the app was "a step in the right direction" because it discourages kids from lying about their age to get an account on Facebook, which has a minimum age of 13.

The versions for Android and Amazon's tablets are all set to come out eventually.

He was joined in his criticism by leading children's society Barnardo's, which said the firm is targeting kids too young to use social media responsibly.

"The risk of exposure to things they were not developmentally prepared for is huge", she said.

Messenger Kids is full of features just for kids. At that point, your child's device can be handed back to them so that they can start using Messenger Kids.

Is Facebook down? Is Facebook Messenger not working?

Probably the most useful tool is Down Detector, a tool that tracks user reports about problems with other websites.

The CEO of the nonprofit Family Online Safety Institute, Stephen Balkam, stated: "that train has left the station". However, the new move will open up use of the network to those under 13.

This is why Facebook as well many other social media companies forbid and prohibited the younger kids from joining.

"Particularly for parents who have already tried to get their under 13s onto Facebook so they can communicate with grandma, this is a godsend", said Stephen Balkam, the founder and CEO of the Family Online Safety Institute.

First, download the Messenger Kids app from the Apple App Store. "But why should parents simply trust that Facebook is acting in the best interest of kids?" said Jim Steyer, executive director of Common Sense Media, in a statement. "For the significant minority of parents who are tech skeptics, they will probably want to steer clear".
