  • Yemen's Saleh ready for 'new page' with Saudi-led coalition as clashes rage

Yemen's veteran former president Ali Abdullah Saleh has been killed in a roadside attack after switching sides in the country's civil war.

"Our appeals to the leader of the conference were met with a negative attitude", Houthi said.

Al-Houthi has called for a major march in Sanaa on Tuesday for what he said was a "God sent" incident after the death of Saleh.

The 75-year-old was killed outside the capital Sanaa, along with the assistant secretary-general of his General People's Congress party (GPC), party officials confirmed.

Multiple images and videos of what appeared to be Saleh's dead body were posted to social media sites, though could not be immediately confirmed.

Saleh ruled the country for 30 years before being forced from power in 2012 following an attempted assassination.

The statement described Saleh as the master of betrayal and mentioned that his followers cut off roads and attacked the citizens violently in the context of their Saudi-led scheme.

A military commander loyal to Saleh told Xinhua by phone saying that "overnight, the coalition planes airdropped weapons and different kinds of communications equipment to the commanders who are leading the anti-Houthi uprising in Sanaa".

The violence comes amid a civil war in which renegade soldiers loyal to Saleh and Houthi militants had together been fighting pro-government forces backed by the Saudi-led coalition. "However, I don't feel that his death will greatly impact the war, as he had recently split with the Houthi forces as he tried to end the Saudi blockade, which undermines any argument that he held sway with the Houthi leadership".

Arab media claimed Iranian drones detected the former president's motorcade leaving Sanaa and alerted the Houthis, who said Saleh was fleeing to territory under control of the Saudi-led coalition. The rebels later said they had blown up Saleh's home.

Earlier on Monday, Abdullah Saleh, a resident living in Sanaa's southern Al Sabaeen district, said the Houthis had stormed the homes of numerous Saleh loyalists in the nearby neighbourhoods of Hadah and Beet Bous and besieged the homes of sheikhs close to the former president.

In 2015, Saudi Arabia and its Arab allies launched a massive air campaign aimed at reversing Houthi military gains and shoring up Yemen's embattled government.

He said the Houthis have put a stop to a massive plot, which represented a serious threat to the country and to its stability and security, as well as the unity of its people, by handing it over to its enemies, after they had failed to capture it in almost three years of battle.

The Saudi-led coalition imposed a total blockade in October on the country, where almost 80 percent of the people need humanitarian aid to survive.
