Last year, only 42,969 computer science students graduated into the workforce in the US. By 2025, every student in the city will receive computer science education in elementary, middle and high school. "Right now most schools in California don't offer any computer science classes and sadly, that disparity is punctuated by striking gender and racial gaps", Lt. Governor Newsom said. "Computer Science Education Week is a great time for students, teachers, and families to get engaged, and it's wonderful to see initiatives like the CS4All Hack League that encourage our students to compete and excel in their academics as they would on a sports field or on a stage". A total of 347 schools have signed up, offering a range of activities including an "Hour of Code", the hackathons, parent activities, guest speakers and computer science lessons.

Forty students have completed all 50 boot camp missions and are awaiting the next 20 missions to be released in the Week of Code. Computer science can help nurture problem-solving skills, logic and creativity. Computer science is foundational for every industry today, yet most schools don't teach it. Using iPads and free apps like Swift Playground, students from kindergarten through to college and beyond can now learn how to code.

At P.S. 241 in Brooklyn, for example, Snoopy teamed up with codeSpark Academy to debut Snoopy Snow Brawl, a learn-to-code game. Not only are these tutorials easy to follow but they also introduce learners to "commands", "repeat loops" and "if statements", concepts which are the foundation of all computer programming. "When students use technology to create something of their own design by coding, it builds both technical skill and confidence - both of which are critical for success in the future".

The app has also been designed with privacy laws like the Children's Online Privacy and Protection Act in mind. Davis said that Facebook spoke with the Federal Trade Commission to ensure that the app complies with COPPA.

More than 450 middle school girls from metro schools will take part in what's called "Hour of Code".

As this generation of learners grows up more tech savvy, and more aware of technology's potential, it's hoped they will be able to apply their skills to successfully overcome the challenges of climate change, overpopulation, rapid urbanisation, mass migration, health epidemics and economic instability - challenges which will only be overcome with technology and human ingenuity. Amazon, Microsoft, and Facebook have donated more than $10 million each to Code.org since its inception.
