IOC bans Russian Olympic Committee for 2018 Games

  • IOC ban Russia from 2018 Winter Olympics over doping

There will be no Russian anthems, flags or uniforms at February's Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang after the country was banned for state-sponsored doping. They'd compete under a neutral Olympic flag, not their own; the Olympic anthem would play rather than any state-sponsored music; and they'd be labeled "Olympic Athletes from Russian Federation".

Russian athletes are among those targeted most with the nation awaiting the International Olympic Committee decision on its participation at February's Pyeongchang winter Olympics following the widespread doping scandal in the country. "Russia will deny to the end, and if a line was not drawn, I feel behind closed doors they would have made a mockery of the Olympic movement". In the last month, the IOC's own commission has banned more than 20 Russian athletes from the Olympics for life over doping violations at the 2014 Winter Games that Russia hosted in Sochi.

The IOC's decision comes 18 months after it had refused an outright ban of Russian athletes at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics and told global sports federations to decide individually on the participation of Russians in Brazil.

The commission based its findings on an independent report by Canadian lawyer Richard McLaren that was commissioned by the World Anti-Doping Agency and published a year ago.

The punishment also prevents Russian officials from participating in official Olympic events, including Minister of Sport Vitaly Mutko and Deputy Minister of Sport Yuri Nagornykh, who are permanently banned from all future events.

The IOC measures will have huge repercussions for football's world governing body FIFA and next year's World Cup in Russia, as Mutko is the president of the Russian Football Union and chairman of the Russia 2018 organising committee.

The sanction, which may provoke a Russian boycott, was the recommendation of an International Olympic Committee (IOC) disciplinary commission led by ex-Swiss president Samuel Schmid.

To withdraw Mr Dmitry Chernyshenko, the former CEO of the Organising Committee Sochi 2014, from the Coordination Commission Beijing 2022.

Bach said: "This should serve as a catalyst for a more effective anti-doping system led by Wada".

German broadcaster ARD airs documentary alleging systematic doping in Russian athletics.

The Russian authorities have vehemently denied any state involvement in doping and pledged to work with global sports bodies to curb the use of banned performance-enhancing drugs in the country.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously said it would be humiliating for his country to compete without national symbols. We salute whistleblower Dr. Grigory Rodchenkov, who risked so much to tell this story, and support all those who are willing to speak truth to power. It wants the scientist extradited from the United States, where he is a protected witness.

"I very much regret that the International Olympic Committee made such a unusual decision", Mikhail Fedotov, chairman of the Presidential Council on Human Rights, told Interfax on Tuesday.

It looks like Russia's past issues with doping athletes has royally bit them in the ass.
