  • Time reveals shortlist for Person of the Year

The #MeToo movement represents the people, mostly women, who have fueled a worldwide discussion about sexual harassment and assault.

That is a distinct possibilty, as the magazine announced Monday on NBC's "Today" show that Kaepernick is one of 10 finalists for its prestigious annual honor. Trump has clashed very publicly with all of them this past year.

Time has been selecting the year's most influential person, group or idea since 1927.

Time.com noted that, "The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback was unable to find an NFL suitor this year after launching a national protest against racism and police brutality by kneeling during the national anthem". Robert Mueller's name has been in the news nearly daily since he was appointed as special counsel after Trump fired former FBI Director James Comey. Trump has also proposed ending DACA, a programme that gives legal status to "Dreamers", undocumented immigrants that have been in the US since they were children.

The #MeToo movement, which was started in 2006 by social activist Tarana Burke to allow victims of sexual misconduct to share their stories and took off this past October in the wake of allegations against Harvey Weinstein, was next up on the list. Mueller has since brought charges against several people while investigating Russia's involvement in the 2016 presidential election.
