  • American Airlines says holiday 'scheduling error' is being resolved

The problem could have forced the airline to cancel as many as 15,000 flights over the holidays.

American Airlines computer glitch causes holiday pilot shortage. As of Friday, American said it had arranged to have pilots for all but a few hundred flights and was working to fill the rest.

The APA originally reported on Tuesday that thousands of AA flights in the latter half of December did not have pilots assigned to them, due to a "failure within the pilot schedule bidding system" that allowed too many pilots to request vacation during the same time period. "That number of open flights continues to decrease thanks to our pilots who are stepping up to the plate and picking up trips to ensure customers are taken care of", said American Airlines.

Mr. Tajer said that while flights remained unassigned, the terms of Friday's agreement were expected to attract enough pilots to cover the gap.

Houthi Leader Says Saleh Supporters' Behavior 'Unjustifiable', Urges Wisdom
In a statement on Saturday the Saudi-led coalition praised Saleh for "taking the lead" in the conflict. But Houthi rebels , his allies until this week, accused him of a "coup".

An agreement between the airline and the Allied Pilots Association helped to correct the pilot staffing issue, according to American Airlines spokeswoman Alexis Aran Coello. On its website, the APA also stated that nor it or the pilot contracts can guarantee the promised premium pay being offered by the airline.

It's all good news though for passengers scheduled to fly on American Airlines as both the carrier and the APA have confirmed that all flights in December will operate as scheduled.

As first reported, the error impacted more than 15,000 flights from December 17-31.
