Israel has vowed to combat Iranian influence in Syria to defend its own interests in the region.

Israeli missiles struck a military position near Damascus overnight and Syria's air defence system thwarted them, Syrian state television said on Saturday.

However, some of the missiles hit their intended target, causing loud explosions near the towns of Kesweh and Sahnaya, the source further added.

Earlier Tehran based Press TV reported that Syrian army has fired at least four surface-to-surface missiles at Israeli aircraft as the (Israeli) regime launched an attack against the western countryside of Damascus. The report added that "our defense forces destroyed two enemy targets".

SANA, the state news agency, claimed Syrian air defenses shot down two of the Israeli missiles. According to the reports, the damage to the base was heavy.

Israeli leaders of late have issued several statements committing to preventing a growing Iranian presence in Lebanon or Syria, including the establishment of bases. Satellite images showed construction at the alleged base.

Netanyahu has previously warned that Iran was building permanent military installations in Syria, and the head of Iran's Revolutionary Guards Corps Qassem Soleimani has been photographed along with other Iranian troops in the country.

Israel seized 1,200 square kilometres (460 square miles) of the Golan Heights from Syria in the Six-Day War of 1967 and later annexed it in a move never recognised by the global community.
