The move comes as allegations of sexual misconduct against the Alabama Republican continue to roil his campaign.

Trump, who won election despite facing more than a dozen accusations of sexual misconduct himself, appeared last Tuesday to shrug off the allegations against Moore, saying, "Forty years is a long time". "When you're a star, they let you do it", Trump said on the "Access Hollywood" tape. "But I can tell you we don't need somebody who's soft on crime like Jones", Trump said.

Moore has repeatedly denied the allegations.

Two women have accused Moore of assaulting or molesting them when they were teenagers and he was in his 30s.

Republican leaders briefly explored the possibility of seeking a write-in candidate but have determined those efforts would only increase Jones' chances by splitting the GOP vote in the Republican state.

"I'm not taking it from a Republican perspective or a Democrat perspective; I'm thinking about those folks who have been negatively impacted by these allegations", he continued.

Ahead of his arrival at the Trump International Golf Club in Florida, his 81st visit to a golf club and 103rd at a Trump property since assuming the presidency, Donald Trump doubled down on his advocacy for Roy Moore.

The South Dakota legislator suggested that while "ultimately the decision is up to the people of Alabama", Mr Trump can use his power to get Mr Moore to pull out of the race.

The special election to fill the seat held by Republican Jeff Sessions, now the US attorney general, is December 12. Richard Shelby and first daughter Ivanka Trump responding to the allegations against Moore.
