Left-hander Marsh has played 23 Tests, 52 one-day Internationals and 15 Twenty20 games for Australia and is in the 13-man squad for the start of this year's Ashes series. While the Australian vice-captain is expected to play, Marsh's position is not so certain.

"I'm extremely excited to join Glamorgan for the 2018 season", he said, lifting his attention from Ashes preparations for a few seconds. He even joked that Warner might even adopt West Indies legend Shivnarine Chanderpaul's unusual stance if need be.

Glamorgan say they will engage another overseas player to cover the opening weeks of the season if Marsh is signed by an IPL franchise.

"We wanted to bring in someone who is experienced at worldwide level, can bat at the top of the order and can play in all three formats of the game, and Shaun ticks all of those boxes for us".

Glamorgan's director of cricket Hugh Morris added, "We wanted to bring in someone who is experienced at worldwide level, can bat at the top of the order and can play in all three formats of the game, and Shaun ticks all of those boxes for us".

"I am confident I will be ready whenever and wherever my chance comes".

On the selection, England skipper Joe Root said: "It wasn't an easy decision".

"Well I think we're about due to win here, aren't we?"

Warner said of Bancroft: 'He looks like he knows his game very well and he looks pretty complete in the nets. "Our team vibe has been incredible, so come the first day I think we're going to hit the ground running".
