"I hope that 37 years into [his] rule he doesn't want another 37 seconds of rule", said war veterans' leader Chris Mutsvangwa. Shrewd and ruthless, he managed to stay in power despite advancing age, growing opposition, worldwide sanctions and the dissolving economy of a once-prosperous African nation.

Pressure was now mounting from all sides on the 93-year-old, the only leader Zimbabwe has known since its independence in 1980, to swiftly end the confusion that has gripped the country since the de facto military coup last Wednesday.

Mr Mangawana said President Mugabe had also failed to implement the constitution, and his advanced age meant he was no longer fit for office. But she is insulting civil servants, the vice president, at public rallies. Mugabe fired Emmerson Mnangagwa earlier this month, starting this crisis.

Since last week, Mugabe has been confined to his lavish "Blue Roof" residence in Harare, apart from two trips to State House to meet the generals and one to a university graduation ceremony at which he appeared to fall asleep.

Lastly, if the military was motivated by the patriotic duty to return the country to normalcy, then there must be a call for an all-stakeholders' meeting to craft a way forward without any further delay.

To cheers and singing, members of the ruling ZANU-PF party's Central Committee began an emergency meeting Sunday to recall Mugabe as party leader.

Zanu-PF reinstated and elevated Mnangagwa - the man tipped to succeed Mugabe - as the party's first secretary, the position Mugabe held.

Zanu-PF: The Mugabe heave-ho will start tomorrow

"They will start impeaching him (Tuesday), that is certainly the will of the military, but it's increasingly now the will of the people", Vandome told AFP.

Chiwenga called for calm after Zimbabweans had celebrated Saturday at anti-Mugabe marches that would have been brutally repressed just a week ago. State-run media covered the events with headlines like "MugabeMustGo!"

But the military would prefer sacked vice president Emmerson Mnangagwa to succeed Mugabe, which is not possible at the moment as he is not now in the government.

November 6: After a campaign of public insults against Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Mugabe fires his longtime deputy, later accusing him of plotting to take power via witchcraft.

As the economy crumbled and opposition to his rule grew in the late 1990s, Mugabe tightened his grip in the southern African country of 16 million, seizing white-owned farms, unleashing security forces to crush dissent and speaking of ruling until he was 100. "The whole party is going to support the cause", Matuke said. High-profile opposition leaders such as Morgan Tsvangiari, who shared power with Mugabe between 2009 and 2013 before losing disputed elections, are expected to play a role in a new government, but they have said they have not been contacted by those taking part in the Mugabe negotiations.

The charges will be that Mugabe attempted to "usurp" power by cashiering Mnangagwa in an attempt to pass the reins to his wife Grace.
