  • HBO's 'Game of Thrones' hacker hit with charges in the US

The FBI and U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of NY revealed Tuesday at a press conference than an Iranian named Behzad Mesri is wanted for "stealing proprietary data, including information about then-unreleased episodes of the popular television series, Game of Thrones, and then allegedly seeking to extort HBO".

On Tuesday, the U.S. Attorney's office in NY announced charges against an Iranian national who stands accused of hacking into the network's servers.

The indictment charges Mesri with hacking into HBO from May to August and stealing unaired episodes of programs including "Ballers", "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and "The Deuce".

He also was able to obtain full scripts and cast lists for 'Game of Thrones, ' only two episodes of which had been released at that point.

According to the indictment, Mesri is a "self-professed expert in computer hacking techniques, and had worked on behalf of the Iranian military to conduct computer network attacks that targeted military systems, nuclear software systems, and Israeli infrastructure". Behzad Mesri sought millions of dollars in bitcoins, threatening to post spoilers on the internet.

Another email was sent that threatened to publicly release the stolen data unless HBO paid a "non-negotiable" ransom of $5.5 million worth of bitcoin.

Mesri is accused of planning to breach HBO's computer systems in May 2017 for the objective of stealing proprietary data.

One of those targets, the feds allege, was HBO. "HBO is hacked.Beware of heart attacks".

Mesri has been charged with multiple counts, including, wire fraud, computer hacking, aggravated identify theft and interstate transmission of extortionate communication.

Behzad Mesri, who went by the alias Skote Vahshat, has been indicted for cybercrimes related to the alleged hacks, the Manhattan U.S. Attorney's Office said.

At the time, HBO said of the extortion scheme, "That's a game we're not going to participate in".

In a statement, Kim said, "Mesri now stands charged with federal crimes, and although not arrested today, he will forever have to look over his shoulder until he is made to face justice".
